AMITY TWP., Pa. -

Emergency crews had their work cut out for them with a serious accident that closed a stretch of Route 422 in eastern Berks County.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Hess gas station on Route 422 East in Amity Township.

The driver of the car began to doze off at the wheel, police said.

The car then went off the highway, hit an embankment, went airborne over some bushes, slammed into the sign and then rolled at least once before coming to rest on a grassy embankment between the store's parking lot and the highway.

Emergency crews had to peel the roof off the car to reach two of the three victims inside. A child was able to get out of the car on his own, police said.

All three victims were treated at Reading Hospital and later released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A large amount of debris was also spread across the highway as a result of the accident, which closed the eastbound lanes of Route 422 while crews worked on the scene.
