Chef Alan's has closed its restaurant in Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co., dealing yet another blow to the struggling Fairgrounds Square Mall.
A sign posted on the restaurant's door Tuesday stated that the location is now closed to the public and will be open only for scheduled parties until July 31.
The sign advises customers that they can be served at Chef Alan's original location at 6th and Penn avenues in West Reading, which has been in business since 1988.
Chef Alan's also manages the restaurant at the Reading Country Club in Exeter Township.
Chef Alan's is the latest in a string of businesses to leave the Fairgrounds Square Mall, which has been struggling in recent years.
The previous owner entered into foreclosure, bringing about a U.S. Marshal sale to The Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company for $13.6 million in March.
The bank has still not said what its plans are for the mall, which opened in 1980 on the site of the former Reading Fairgrounds.
Muhlenberg Township officials have said they've been told the sale will likely have no impact on the mall's dwindling number of tenants, which include Bath & Bodyworks, Schuylkill Valley Sports and a 10-screen movie theater. Boscov's and Burlington Coat Factory serve as two of the mall's anchor stores.
