BERN TWP., Pa. -

Berks County District Attorney John Adams is heading the investigation into the death of a Berks Heim resident, county officials announced Monday.

The elderly woman, whose name has not been released, was taken from the county's nursing home in Bern Township to the nearby St. Joseph Medical Center on Friday, said Carl Geffken, the county's chief operating officer.

The woman died Saturday, Geffken said.

"The county is fully cooperating with the district attorney's office in order to better understand the circumstances preceding the woman's death," Geffken said.

Adams has requested an autopsy be done on the woman as part of the investigation, Geffken said.

Berks County Coroner Dennis Hess told 69 News that the preliminary investigation has turned up nothing suspicious with the woman's death.
