A dropped mask has led police to arrest one of two people in the assault of a man in Berks County.
Franklin Santana was wearing a zombie-style Halloween mask and carrying a baseball bat when he and another man, wearing a clown mask and armed with a gun, entered a commercial garage in the 2200 block of Howard Boulevard in Mount Penn on the afternoon of April 26, police said.
Santana proceeded to break the windows of a vehicle an employee was working on, police said.
The employee, fearing for his life, picked up a hammer and went after his assailants, but they managed to get the upper hand, said police, who noted that Santana's mask came off during the struggle. The employee recognized him from past business deals, according to court documents.
Santana then held the employee's arms while the other man wearing the clown mask repeatedly punched the victim in the face with a closed fist, police said.
The men then dropped the employee on the floor, ran into the office, took a laptop computer and then proceeded to lower the garage door. The employee, afraid the men were preparing to kill him, got up and ran out of the garage before the door closed, police said.
Santana, 42, of Reading, was charged with aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment. He was committed Wednesday to the Berks County Jail on $25,000 bail.
The search for the second man, wearing the clown mask, continues. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
