Pennsylvania has awarded a $30,041 grant to the Berks County Solid Waste Authority for its household hazardous waste collection program.
The funding was awarded from the Pennsylvania Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention grant program and administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection, said Pa. Rep. Tom Caltagirone, D-Berks Co.
"This funding will be used to reimburse the authority for half of the cost of developing and operating a local collection event," Caltagirone said. "Anything from old paint and pool chemicals to car cleaners and certain solutions pose a great threat to our environment, and this type of program and event really help cut down on pollution and other public health hazards."
The Berks County Solid Waste Authority has scheduled two household hazardous waste collections for county residents this year. The first will take place at the Governor Mifflin Intermediate School in Shillington on April 19; the second will be held at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading on Oct. 18. Both will run from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., rain or shine.
