PIKE TWP., Pa. -

Firefighters managed to save a home in eastern Berks County from going up in flames on New Year's Day.

Crews responded at 10:38 a.m. Wednesday to a reported fire at a home off Hill Church Road in Pike Township, near Bechteslville.

The first firefighters to arrive on the scene found smoke and fire inside the home, officials said. They quickly stretched a hose up a long, winding driveway to reach the home.

The crews managed to contain the fire to the basement, near a wood stove, and cleared the rest of the home of smoke.

No injuries were reported.
