LAURELDALE, Pa. -

About 10 homes in Berks County had to be evacuated after a car hit a natural gas meter, officials said.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2100 block of Adams Street in Laureldale.

Officials said the car hopped a curb and barreled into the meter, severing gas pipes.

According to authorities, a safety device shut down the gas automatically, and the homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

Residents were allowed back in their homes a short time later.
