A Reading man has been charged with attempted homicide after he tried to kill his estranged girlfriend with their young son inside the home, said police.
Jose Lizcano's mug shot looked like a real-life Joker with the tattoos and scars across his face.
According to police, he wasn't joking around when he violently choked his estranged girlfriend to the point of unconsciousness inside his father's house in the 200 block of Pennwyn Place in Cumru Township, Berks County.
"She has obvious wounds around her throat and the back of her neck from the choking," said Detective Sergeant George Kuriger, Cumru Township Police Department.
The incident was reported just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The attack was so violent a family member stepped in after she heard the cries for help.
"She did actually leave the residence when Lizcano ran after the victim, grabbed her by the hair, pulled her to the ground and resumed choking her again to the point she lost consciousness," said Kuriger.
The family member stepped in a second time and the victim managed to escape to a local gas station, where she called 911.
Police said the struggle started when Lizcano became enraged after his estranged girlfriend threatened to file for child support.
"People all have a tendency of doing irrational things," said Stan Care, a neighbor on the block.
"That's hard to believe because we don't have much violence really in this neighborhood," said Patricia Ramer, who lives a few houses away.
The young child was not hurt, but the victim was treated at the hospital. She was released and back to work Thursday.
According to court records, Lizcano pleaded guilty to simple assault and making terroristic threats in 2008.
Now, he is facing attempted homicide and related charges. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $75,000 bail.
