Man escapes from Berks County Jail system
Christopher Saylor found hiding in tree 30 minutes later
An inmate was captured a short time after officials said he escaped from the Berks County Community Reentry Center on Thursday.
Christopher Saylor had just a half-hour of freedom before police found him hiding in a tree near the old Berks Heim in Bern Township.
Saylor 23, was returning from his work release assignment to the reentry center at 1040 Berks Rd. in Bern Township shortly before 6:30 p.m. when he made a break for it, officials said.
Officers with the Berks County Jail System gave chase across County Welfare Road before they lost sight of him.
Officers from numerous departments responded to assist in the search for Saylor before an Exeter K-9 unit eventually located him around 7 p.m.
According to a news release from the warden, Saylor was serving a six- to 12-month sentence for harassment and simple assault. He was due to be released from jail on Jan. 1, 2014.
In addition to serving the remainder of his current sentence, he will now face a felony escape charge.
