PIKE TWP., Pa. -

Hundreds of people who drive through Pike Township in Berks County have reason to celebrate.

The new Bertolet Mill Road bridge over Pine Creek is now open to traffic, PennDOT announced Thursday.

The old two-span, concrete beam bridge, built in 1916, was closed in December so that it could be replaced with new single-span, concrete box beam bridge, PennDOT said.

The $1,043,873 project forced the nearly 600 drivers who use the bridge between Hoch and Lobachsville roads each day to follow a detour.

One benefit of the new bridge is that it has no weight restriction, whereas the restriction on the old bridge was 11 tons, PennDOT said.
