Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale is calling for increased awareness and access for Maxatawny Township residents accustomed to voting on the campus of Kutztown University.

The Berks County Commissioners voted over the summer to move the township's 3rd precinct polling place from K.U.'s  Keystone Hall to the Maxatawny Township municipal building, four miles away at 127 Quarry Rd.

DePasquale said Tuesday he is concerned that voters who discover the change at the last-minute may decide not to participate in the general election on Nov. 5.

"We should be making every effort possible to help anyone who wants to exercise their right to vote. We should smooth out any bumps that could discourage voters," DePasquale said.

Debbie Olivieri. the county's director of elections, said her office has mailed a notice to Kutztown University regarding the relocation and asked that the notice be posted in Keystone Hall.

Olivieri said Kutztown University is also planning to bus student voters to the new polling place at the township building.

Six other polling places in Berks County -- three in the city and three in the suburbs -- are also relocating for next week's election, but DePasquale's statement did not mention any need for increased awareness in regard to those moves, which are:
