Pair of accidents stop traffic on Route 222 in Wyomissing area
Reading woman died at hospital after first crash in Wyomissing
A Reading woman has died of injuries she suffered in an accident in Berks County on Thursday, officials said.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. on the West Shore Bypass in Wyomissing, beneath the Route 422 ramp to the Warren Street Bypass.
Ellen Rodriguez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where the coroner said she later died of chest injuries. She was 69.
The southbound lanes of the highway were closed while police investigated the accident.
As a result of the traffic backup, three other vehicles crashed on 222 South, directly behind the Broadcasting Square shopping center, officials said.
Initial reports there were that one person was confined to a car. A picture from the scene showed that emergency crews had to remove the roof to free that person.
In the end, three people -- one from each of the crashed vehicles -- were transported to the hospital, but officials had no information about the extent of their injuries.
Southbound drivers on Route 222 were advised to use caution as they approached the area until the wreckage of both accidents could be cleared.
