PennDOT boosting weight restrictions on 48 bridges in Berks County
PennDOT is increasing weight restrictions on about 1,000 structurally deficient bridges in Pennsylvania.
Transportation officials said the restrictions are being added because of safety and preservation concerns.
The restrictions will affect 32 locally owned bridges and 16 state-owned bridges in Berks County.
The move comes a few weeks after a proposal to raise taxes and fees to improve infrastructure stalled in the Legislature.
"They are not unsafe, not unsafe," said Barry Schoch, PennDOT secretary. "We're restricting the weight so we can slow down deterioration and so we can apply our resources to all 11,000 bridges to make sure we don't have a bigger problem coming at us in the future."
Pennsylvania has nearly 4,500 structurally deficient bridges, the most of any state.
