Tests were underway Monday to determine the extent to which a man was under the influence when he crashed a van with four unrestrained children inside, police said.
The accident was reported shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday at Long Lane and Deer Run Road in Maxatawny Township, Berks County.
Omar Moya, 35, of Reading, initially denied to police that he was behind the wheel of the van, with nine occupants inside, when it struck another vehicle head-on, according to court documents.
Four children -- a two-year-old boy, two five-year-old boys, and an eight-year-old boy -- were seated in the rear of the van without proper seat belts or child safety restraints at the time of the accident, police said.
No one was seriously injured.
Investigators eventually determined the van's driver to be Moya, who then admitted to drinking one alcoholic beverage, police said.
Results of field sobriety tests indicated he was under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and unable to safely drive a vehicle, leading to his arrest, according to court documents.
Moya's blood is being tested to determine its alcohol content, police said. In the meantime, he is behind bars in the Berks County Jail on charges that include DUI, endangering another person, careless driving, and improper child restraint system.
