Police officer in Lancaster County shoots, kills man who ran at him with knife, officials say
A police officer in Lancaster County shot and killed a man who ran at him with a knife, officials said.
The shooting happened around 3:20 a.m. Saturday at a home in the 100 block of Arrowhead Drive in Lititz Borough.
A press release from Lititz police provided the following account:
Shortly after 3 a.m., a woman made a 911 call stating she needed help with her grandson at her Lititz home.
When the responding police officer arrived at the Arrowhead Drive home, a 22-year-old man started yelling and threatened to kill the officer.
The officer attempted to calm the man, but he grabbed the officer and tried to remove the officer's handgun from its holster.
Following a physical struggle, the officer fired his Taser, which had no visible effect on the man.
The man then ran into the kitchen and grabbed a large kitchen knife. Despite repeated orders to stop, the man continued coming at the officer with the knife raised over his head.
The officer then fired his gun, striking the man multiple times and killing him. It is unknown at this time how many shots were fired or how many times he was struck.
At this point, investigators are not releasing the names of the officer or the man who was shot.
The officer is currently on paid administrative leave, which police say is routine procedure during officer involved shooting investigations.
Once the investigation and autopsy are completed, the DA will determine if the officer's use of deadly force complied with state law.
