Reading police are investigating a homicide that happened overnight in the city.
Officers responded to the 400 block of Schuylkill Avenue just before 1 a.m. Saturday for a report of shots being fired.
Neighbors told 69 News they heard five gunshots before police arrived.
"I fell on the floor because I know bullets don't have eyes," said resident Santa Rivera. "A lot of people get shot from bullets going through windows when they're sitting watching TV. I wasn't going to be one of them."
When police arrived, they found one male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He was identified as Luis A. Rosario.
Rosario, 22, lived in the block he was killed, police said.
Friends told 69 News that Rosario is a native of Puerto Rico and moved to Reading almost two years ago. According to those friends, Rosario was a factory worker at Ashley Furniture near Leesport.
They described Rosario as a "nice guy" with a contagious smile and a genuine love for life. Friends said Rosario has a brother in Reading and parents still in Puerto Rico.
A memorial with candles, pictures and flowers was placed behind his Reading home Saturday afternoon.
Police said the shooting is possibly the result of an earlier altercation nearby.
The shooting marks the fourth homicide in Reading in 2014, and the third this month. Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact them immediately or call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
