READING, Pa. -

The Reading Public Library is heading home for the holidays.

Workers have completed extensive renovations of the main library's century-old building at South 5th and Franklin streets in center city.

The library has been closed for the work since Aug. 22. The facelift it received included a fresh coat of paint on the walls, repaired plaster, new carpeting and a newly designed and enhanced children’s department.

The library's staff is now working to return all the materials and ready the building for reopening to the public on Dec. 26.

While the work was being done, a "popUP Library" on Penn Street provided patrons with access to highly circulated materials and computers. It was due to close Monday.

Hours at the library's three branches were also extended during the renovations. They'll resume regular hours on Jan. 2.
