When smoke and flames erupt in Reading, fire crews are there. For Todd Iaeger, the city's fire marshal, it has been his passion for the last 17 years.
"I can honestly say I have worked the two greatest jobs in the world," said Iaeger, who started as a firefighter in 1997.
Iaeger's began his public service seven years before that when he joined Reading's police force.
"Twenty-four years here between police and fire, it has been a tremendous learning curve and learning experience for me," said Iaeger, who was promoted to fire marshal in 2005.
Iaeger has now accepted the position of fire marshal in Chapel Hill, N.C., but he said he would not be anywhere without his time in Reading.
"It is very humbling and it is very appreciative," said Iaeger, who starts in Chapel Hill on April 1.
Over the years, Iaeger said he enjoyed solving arson cases and doing community outreach, but what he will miss most are the people he has worked with over the years.
