Rey Rodriguez jailed in home invasion, brick attack in Reading
Victim suffered skull fracture, brain bleeding in Jan. 14 attack, police say
A Reading man has been jailed in a home invasion robbery in which police said the victim was hit on the head with a brick and tied up.
Rey Rodriguez was already hiding inside the home in the 1100 block of North 12th Street late on the night of Jan. 14 when the victim arrived home from closing the nearby grocery store he operates, police said.
Rodriguez demanded money before striking the man on his head with a brick, tying up his hands and feet and then stealing the keys to the victim's home and grocery store on North 11th Street, police said.
Rodriguez further threatened to set fire to the house and store if the victim reported the incident to police, according to court documents.
The victim, who suffered a fractured skull, was rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, where police said he underwent surgery for bleeding on his brain.
Officers subsequently responded to the grocery store and found it had already been burglarized, police said.
The victim later identified Rodriguez in a photo lineup. The suspect was then charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, burglary and criminal trespass. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $100,000 bail.
