Two people were injured in a crash that flattened a car and sent a box truck down an embankment in southern Berks County.
The violent impact happened at 11 a.m. Wednesday when the car pulled into the truck's path on Route 23, near the Interstate 176 interchange, in Caernarvon Township, officials said.
Rescue crews had to climb down the embankment to free the truck's driver from the cab. A medical helicopter was standing by at the scene to fly him to a hospital, but paramedics instead transported him by ambulance.
The driver of the car, whose son was in another vehicle behind him, was also taken to a hospital, but officials on the scene could provide no information about the injuries of either victim.
A hazardous materials crew was called to the scene for the spill of 30 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel into a creek.
