Shopping center evacuated in bomb scare
AMITY TWP., Pa. -

A shopping center in Berks County was evacuated and the Reading bomb squad was called to the scene after a man was found dead inside a car, police said.

At least 10 stores were cleared out at around 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ben Franklin Court Shopping Center on Route 422 in Amity Township.

According to authorities, the man had committed suicide.

Officials didn't know what kind of gas was being pumped into the car, and they feared an explosion.

"Through the use of their robot, being able to access the interior of the car, we were able to determine that the gas was an inert gas that was used," said Amity Township Police Chief Kent Shubrook.

The shopping center reopened at around 6:45 p.m. Sunday.
