Work to fill a sinkhole and repair the damage it caused to a shopping center in Berks County is taking longer than contractors originally expected.
The sinkhole opened May 1 on the eastern end of the Exeter Commons parking lot in Exeter Township.
Crews began work last Monday to fill the hole and repair the damage, but since then, the contractor said they uncovered another sinkhole within the original sinkhole, forcing them to dig deeper than originally planned.
Now, the work is expected to take until at least the end of May, officials said.
Engineers are still working to determine exactly what caused the parking lot to cave in. Heavy rains on the day before the sinkhole opened and the winter's extreme weather are leading theories.
A sinkhole opened on the opposite end of the parking lot in 2010, a year after the shopping center opened.
