St. Joseph Medical Center using robot to rid rooms of super bugs
St. Joseph Medical Center in Bern Township is fighting super bugs in a flash.
The hospital is now home to a robot that uses light to fight super bugs like MRSA.
The robot is nick-named "Flash." It uses the broad UV spectrum to disinfect rooms after patients are discharged. It's also used to clean operating rooms.
The robot uses "ultraviolet C" to penetrate cell walls, making microorganisms unable to reproduce or mutate.
"It's gonna help us as an additional infection prevention measure. We want to break that cycle of germs and we want to kill that germ at an atomic level, and that is exactly what Xenex does," said Perry Focht, general manager, food and environmental services.
Officials said employees really like seeing the robot do its thing.
