The alarm clock signaled an abrupt end of the summer vacation for most school students in Berks County.

Monday was the first day of classes for all students in the Antietam, Brandywine Heights Area, Exeter Township, Fleetwood Area, Governor Mifflin, Kutztown Area, Muhlenberg, Reading, Schuylkill Valley, Tulpehocken Area, Twin Valley Area, Wilson and Wyomissing Area school districts.

Middle and high school students in the Hamburg Area School District also reported to class Monday; elementary school students will begin their year next Tuesday.

Students in the Oley Valley School District were originally scheduled to return to class Monday, but a vote by the school board over the summer moved the start date up to Aug. 20, upsetting many parents who already had late-summer vacation plans scheduled.

First day of school in Reading

Three other school districts in Berks County have yet to open. The Conrad Weiser Area School District will welcome students on Tuesday; Boyertown Area on Wednesday; and Daniel Boone Area on Sept. 3.

As for parochial schools in Berks County, Berks Catholic freshmen began their school year on Monday; all students will report Tuesday.

Other schools in the diocese have varying start dates.
