BETHEL TWP., Pa. -

Some thieves didn't take a holiday as they made off with thousands of dollars' worth of copper over the weekend in Berks County.

State police are investigating the thefts that took place sometime between noon Friday and 6 a.m. Tuesday at the construction site of the new Dollar General Store on Martha Drive in Bethel Twp.

Police said thieves broke into several different locked trailers containing copper wire, copper piping and other miscellaneous copper pieces, loaded them into unknown vehicles and fled the scene.

Officials said the thieves took around 2,000 pounds of copper, with an estimated value of $50,000.
