Tractor trailer crash snarls traffic on Route 222 North near Reamstown
Driver died of natural causes, coroner says
A tractor trailer accident put the brakes on motorists traveling from Lancaster to Reading on Route 222.
The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of 222, about a mile before the Reading interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co.
The truck was hauling construction materials when it veered out of control, hit a tree, went up a small embankment and rolled onto its side, spilling much of its load, officials said.
"It was a very forceful impact," said Chief Scott Achey, Reamstown Fire Co. "I'm not sure on speed, but he did hit a very large tree and he did remove the tree from the ground by the stump."
Police say the driver, 58-year-old Richard Dudley of Perry County, was ejected from the cab and died at the scene of natural causes.
One lane of Route 222 North remained closed for several hours while crews off-loaded the trailer's contents and removed the wreckage.
