Walgreens to open first pharmacy in Berks County
Store to occupy space of former CVS/Pharmacy, Blockbuster video store
Walgreens has begun work on its first pharmacy in Berks County.
The store is scheduled to open this summer on the southeast corner of Lancaster Avenue and Museum Road in Cumru Township, a company spokesman, Phil Caruso, said Tuesday.
"We think Shillington is a good location for us to serve the community as a destination for health and daily living," Caruso said.
The 16,144 square-foot store will exist in spaces previously occupied by a CVS/Pharmacy and a Blockbuster video rental store. A liquor store and a Your Place restaurant make up the other businesses on the property.
Work is already underway to renovate the space and add a drive-thru pharmacy window, said Caruso, adding that the store will employ about 20 people.
Walgreens, headquartered in Deerfield, Ill., is the nation's largest drug store chain with nearly 8,200 locations in the United States, including 122 in Pennsylvania, according to the company's website.
