WEEU leads effort to restore Mothers Tree park in Lower Alsace
Local businesses will take part by planting new tree, restoring railing
As Mother's Day approaches, WEEU has announced plans to restore a beloved tree in Berks County.
The Reading radio station is leading the effort to restore the Mothers Tree park at Antietam Lake in Lower Alsace Township, partnering with the county and local businesses.
The current tree, planted in 1982, has died. Anewalt's Landscaping will plant a new, white birch tree in its place. Bachman Iron Works of Reading will then re-set, repair or replace the iron railing around the tree.
"We believe that our community will continue to thrive when government entities and local businesses work together to preserve history and leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy," said Jo Painter, WEEU general manager.
The first Mothers Tree was planted in 1923.
WEEU's project is part of the county's master plan for the lake and the surrounding area.
