Masked man robs small convenience store in Lenhartsville
Employees of a convenience store in a quiet Berks County community got quite a scare when a man with a gun came in and demanded money.
The Country Cupboard in Lenhartsville is a popular stop for locals and visitors to come in for bite or to shop for groceries, but an unwelcome visitor showed up around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"We were just doing business as usual, and the employee was trying to get my attention," said the store owner, who did not want her name used. "I looked up and I saw somebody with a ski mask on, and I realized that he wasn't here just to shop. He pointed the gun toward the register and the employee did as he was supposed to and just backed off. It doesn't feel real."
The robber not only took cash from the register, but he also stole the owner's peace of mind, she said.
"It's sort of like when you have a nightmare and you wake up and it's over," said the store owner.
"It can happen anywhere. No place is immune to crime," said Tpr. David Beohm, Pa. State Police, adding that the robber ran off, last seen heading west on Old Route 22.
The last time the store was robbed was in 1999 when the Country Cupboard opened, the store owner said.
"It's out of the ordinary for sure," said customer Bob Nemes.
State police said they are looking at the store's surveillance video for clues to identify the man behind the mask.
"We'd like to get this guy so he doesn't do it again," said Beohm.
