New leadership for Reading School District's board
The Reading School District has a new board President.
Board members appointed Mr. Robert Heebner Jr. as board President during Monday night's reorganization meeting in Reading.
Heebner will be replacing Yvonne L. Stroman who served as board President since her appointment last December.
Heebner will leave his position as school board vice president. Replacing Heebner, will be current board member Pierre V. Cooper.
The Reading Education Association congratulated Heebener but noted the many challenges the district faces in the upcoming year. In a released statement, the association hopes that Heebner will focus on "proven solutions that work," such as "smaller class sizes, safer schools, early education, and parental involvement."
The Reading School District had to overcome numerous obstacles within the past year, including disruptive student behavior and the passage of a budget that terminated over a hundred teaching positions. The controversial budget split the board of 9, with 5 approving it and 4 opposing. Property taxes were also increased amid state budget cuts and many buildings owned by the district were closed, leading to overcrowding.
Both the school board and the Reading Education Association say they are working toward the same goal- ensuring students receive a quality education.
