New police officers help beef up ranks of diminished force
After two years of declining numbers in the Reading Police Department, city officials said Wednesday the force is now turning a corner.
With their families looking on, five new police officers took the oath inside City Council chambers, becoming the newest members of the police department.
For Thomas Fleming, it was his first time putting on the uniform. His dream to fight crime started at a young age after seeing his neighbor, a chief of police in West Pottsgrove Twp., Montgmery Co.
"I looked up to him, to tell you the truth, and I just always emulated him, so it was just a natural fit to become a police officer," said Fleming.
"It's one of the proudest moments of my life," said Joseph Ring.
After holding his right hand in the air, Ring posed for pictures with his family. He said he wanted a job he knew would be different every day.
"Being able to help out people, you meet them at the worst part of their life and just help them get through that moment," Ring said.
Chief Bill Heim said the addition of the five officers comes at a crucial time. The department has been working with a diminished force as it tries to tackle crime throughout the city.
According to Heim, 49 officers left the department in 2011, and 23 the year before. Heim said the men will help bring the force back up to speed.
"It's a great day for us. Every officer counts right now, and to have five of them that are already trained join the force, it is good for us," said Heim.
Three officers were also promoted to sergeant, and Chief Heim said 19 other cadets are currently being trained at the academy.
