The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has, at least temporarily, granted a request by Kutztown officials to curtail the hours at its liquor store in the borough.
In a letter sent to the PLCB in November, the borough council requested the store on Constitution Boulevard close at 7p.m. instead of 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Borough officials said they hoped the move would cut down on binge drinking by college students.
The PLCB announced Friday that it has granted Kutztown's request on a six-month basis, despite concerns it had about the impact the modified hours would have on customers who are not part of the issue.
The PLCB said it will re-evaluate the change in six months and decide then whether it should be made permanent.
"As a retailer, we aim to provide good customer service and convenience while also being a good neighbor in the communities that we serve. There's a balance between those two goals that we strive to achieve," said Stacy Kriedeman, deputy director of external affairs for the PLCB.
The store remains closed on Sunday.
