Penn State fans in Berks remember JoePa
Penn St Berks remembers joePa
Penn State students and alums are remembering the life of Joe Paterno across Berks County.
"I think he's the best thing Penn State ever had," said Penn State Berks senior Daniel Haden.
Haden and his classmates called Paterno a legend.
"People will always think of Penn State Berks as Joe Paterno," said sophomore Tom Smith.
The Hall of Fame coach, who spent more than 60 seasons coaching the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, died Sunday, losing his battle with lung cancer.
Students said the tone around the Berks campus Monday was mixed with sadness and confusion.
"A lot of people took it to heart and are really effected by it, so a lot of people are wearing Penn State Pride," said Alana Augello, a junior at the Berks campus.
Paterno's career came to a halt after he was fired on November 9 in the midst of a child sex abuse scandal surrounding former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. With his death happening so close to his departure, many students believed he died of a broken heart.
"Penn State was his life, he gave everything to Penn State," said Haden.
1987 Penn State alum Kevin Miller made his own accusations and hung a sign outside the McKeansburg Hotel in Schuylkill Co., that read, "Trustees Killed Joe Pa."
"It's tough to take that he's gone, especially with what happened at the end," said Miller.
Miller is angry at the board for how they fired Paterno, and now that he's gone Miller said he was owed so much more.
"Hopefully, there is some way to honor him and take away the bad things that happened at the end," said Miller.
That is what the Berks campus plans to do Tuesday night. Students have planned a memorial to remember Joe Paterno and his contributions to the school. The ceremony will start at 7 p.m. outside the Luerssen Building.
