Recovery of wounded Marine considered to be 'miracle'
The recovery of a man who was injured while serving in Afghanistan is being called a miracle.
"He's just the most amazing kid you would ever want to meet," said Amy Long, who is best friends with Mark Fidler's mother.
Fidler, 22, of Strausstown, Berks Co., holds the title of lance corporal after serving four years as a Marine. He comes from a military family.
This past fall, Fidler's dream came true after he was deployed to Afghanistan.
Tragedy struck only six days in, on Oct. 3rd, when he stepped on a landmine.
"It blew off one leg below the knee and one leg above the knee, but because of all the internal damage with his back and everything, they had to amputate all the way up to his pelvis," said Long.
Fidler underwent countless surgeries, and doctors said it's a miracle he's alive.
"He's my best friend, but anytime I hear about another American soldier going down, it goes straight to my heart," said Brian Long, who has been friends with Fidler since age four.
Fidler is recovering in Bethesda, Maryland. Almost three months after the accident, he's pulling through.
Both Amy and Brian Long said his attitude couldn't be better, and he's now able to sit in his wheelchair.
"Mark doesn't give up on anything. He keeps fighting till the end, and he'll make the best of it," said Brian Long.
"It's just a miracle he's alive," said Amy Long. "He's my hero, definitely my hero."
Fidler's parents have been at his side around the clock. They are not working and don't have any income coming in. So, Amy Long is trying to help the family out at a time when they need it the most.
She has been holding fundraisers every month since the accident. She's planning a spaghetti dinner next month and a silent auction and bingo on February 12 at the American Legion in Hamburg. Doors open at noon and the event starts at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.
To buy a ticket or get more information on how to help the Fidler family, give Amy Long a call at 610-451-6583.
