One of the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims with ties to Berks County was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Charlotte Helen Bacon, 6, is one of 20 precious faces of innocence. Family friend Pat Casselberry told 69 News on Wednesday that Charlotte loved animals and filled her family each day with joy and love.

"Why do bad things happen to good people?" asked Casselberry.

Casselberry is a close family friend of Charlotte's father, Joel Bacon. He was a 1988 graduate of Conrad Weiser High School. Casselberry's son, Josh, and Joel Bacon were like two peas in a pod in high school.

"They became bosom buddies because they were the new guys in town," said Casselberry.

On that horrific day last Friday, Casselberry said she received a frantic phone call from her daughter, Amy, that Joel and his wife Joann's two children were inside the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"She talked to her parents into letting her wear her Christmas dress to school that day. And it was all pink because her favorite color was pink," said Casselberry.

As time passed, Bacon's 8 year-old son, Guy, was accounted for but not Charlotte.

"The wait went on through the night. And I think it was in the middle of the night, early morning, that they finally found out that she was one of those poor children who was killed," said Casselberry.

The Robesonia community rallied together to support Joel and his family through this tragedy by hanging ribbons. It was challenging for them to hold back their tears. During this difficult time, the Bacon family said they are grateful to Berks Country for supporting them through their devastating loss.

The Bacon's precious red-headed girl was laid to rest on Wednesday at Newtown Village Cemetery in Newtown, Connecticut.

Charlotte's favorite song was "Home" by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, said Casselberry.

"It was Charlotte's favorite song and they just sang it really loud and just laughed and had a great time rolling down the road singing this song," said Casselberry.

Phillips sent the Bacon family a special video message that was played at Charlotte's funeral service.

The Bacon family believes Charlotte is home and through God's grace she has earned her wings.
