Smoke leads to evacuation of Cabela's store in Tilden
2nd alarm struck to bring crews from Schuylkill County as precaution
The report of a fire at Cabela's led to the evacuation of the store near Hamburg on Thursday morning.
Firefighters responded to the store near Route 61 and Interstate 78 in Tilden Twp., Berks Co. around 8:45 a.m. and found a smoke condition in the area of the aquariums.
The chief on the scene struck a second alarm, calling in crews from neighboring Schuylkill County as a precaution because of the building's size and construction and the usual lack of manpower during the day.
Firefighters climbed to the roof of the store and pinpointed the source of the smoke to be a heating/air conditioning unit on the roof, said Chief Troy Hatt, Hamburg Fire Co, who added that the unit has been disabled until it can be repaired.
No one was injured. The store reopened around 10 a.m.
Cabela's has been extra busy in recent days as customers seek supplies to deal with the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The store on Wednesday quickly sold out of a fresh supply of 700 generators. More are expected to arrive in the coming days.
