State police to patrol Lyons, Topton, Maxatawny in 2013
The state police will have more ground to cover in Berks County in 2013.
Lyons, Topton and Maxatawny Township officials said their communities will be covered by state police, starting in January.
The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department currently patrols those areas, but the force is disbanding at the end of the year.
Officials in Maxatawny Township were planning to form a police department to cover the region, but they said they will now put the idea up for a vote.
"In talking with the board of supervisors, they felt it would be best taking on such a large scale commitment, they would put it on the ballot and let the township residents decide if that's the direction they want to go because its not a short term commitment. It's a commitment that's likely to be here for years to come," said Justin Yaich, township manager.
A meeting about state police coverage in Topton is scheduled for December 10 at 7:30 p.m.
