Police said a domestic dispute may have led to the shooting of Limerick Deputy Fire Chief Glen Russell.

Investigators said the shooting happened as Russell, 43, was getting out of his car shortly before 11 a.m., outside the Montrose Realty Inc. office, 2917 Windmill Rd., in Spring Twp. Berks Co.

According to court documents, Russell was about to meet his ex-wife for a court-appointed meeting.

Spring Township police arrested Christopher Yingling, 41, of Birdsboro, and charged him in the shooting.

Police said Russell identified his shooter as Yingling, and also said Yingling was his ex-wife's boyfriend.

"The armed actor, armed with a shotgun, targeted this individual as he exited the vehicle," said Chief Bryan Ross, Spring Twp., Police Dept.

According to police, Russell suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder and back and fled to nearby National Penn Bank for safety.

A witness, Chris Garber, said he heard three shot fired from where he was standing in the parking of the nearby CVS pharmacy.

"They were distinctly loud," said Garber. "Then I figured, 'Well, I'll wait a few seconds and if it's serious, I'll hear sirens,' because immediately following the shots and the yelling is when the vehicle came out, and the vehicle was moving at a very good speed, blew through the stop signs, blew through the stop light. So, it kind of raised hair on my neck and made me think something's not right here."

While police searched for the alleged shooter, nearby Manor Care Health Services, as well as all schools in Amity Township, were placed on lockdown.

Fearing for the safety of Russell's family members, police said they went to Berks Career and Technology Center's east campus, 16 miles away in Oley Township, and surrounded the building.

Police said they believe the shooting was motivated by a domestic dispute.

"It appears from earlier that it is a domestic-related incident," said Ross.

Russell was last reported to be hospitalized in stable condition. Police said he is expected to recover.

Yingling is charged with criminal attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault.

He's in the Berks County Jail on $150,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 7.
