The Operating Engineers Union Local 542 is responding to criticism from Berks County officials.

Last Thursday, county Commissioner Christian Leinbach accused some members of the union of trespassing and harassing neighbors of Barry and Deb Schlouch in Wyomissing. The couple own Schlouch Inc.

A spokesman for the union said it regrets that the commissioner used a public forum to disparage union members.

A statement from the union said, in part, "We have comported ourselves in a peaceful manner and only asserted our rights under the first amendment of the united states constitution and this country's labor laws."
