Icy roads now the big concern as temperatures tumble overnight
Road crews are warning drivers to beware as tumbling temperatures could turn roads into a sheet of ice.
The snow came in quick, and roads started to deteriorate fast across the region Tuesday.
Plow drivers in Exeter Twp., Berks Co., wasted no time clearing the roads and trying to get ahead of the storm that dumped several inches of snow across the area.
"There were cars all over the road that were pretty much stuck, and we couldn't get around them, so we had to stop and assist so we could get through as well," said Kevin Cogan, a plow driver in Exeter Township.
Cogan started his shift early Tuesday morning. His was one of 14 trucks responsible for clearing about 10-15 miles of roadway around the township.
Cogan said they tried to get as much snow up as possible before the deep freeze moved in.
"A lot of the roads are slushy and once it freezes, all that slush is going to freeze. On Wednesday, we'll be in the same boat with it being an ice skating rink out there," said Cogan.
Plows were also out in full force all over Reading, and workers could be seen putting salt down, even as the snow was still falling.
"The sidewalks are dangerous, but it's pretty cold, too," said Jada Dominguez, who was off from school.
Snow blowers were blaring in neighborhoods all across Berks County. 69 News found one family in Exeter Township armed with shovels, trying to clear their driveway.
"I don't like to have to drive in it and I don't like to take care of it, but fortunately I have four kids who are willing to get out and sled and take care of it for me," said Pat Frederick, who promised to make her kids dinner in exchange for their hard work.
Officials in Exeter Township said they used about 300 tons of salt Tuesday, and they plan to be out again Wednesday morning.
They urged drivers to be careful Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and to be on the lookout for black ice.
