Danica McKellar is best known for her role as Winnie Cooper on "The Wonder Years." Nowadays, she is kicking up her heels on "Dancing with the Stars."
But in order to stay on the show, dancers need high scores from the judges, and they need viewers to vote. That is where Kutztown University students come in.
"They understand social media. They get the concept of social media, and so who better to execute social media than the market we are going after," said Doc Ogden, a Kutztown University marketing professor.
Ogden is friends with Danica, so he suggested his students create a marketing campaign for her.
"A few thousand votes extra will let you win that show, so if we can get the 18-24-year-old demographic voting, we will actually win," said Ogden.
In addition to Tweeting and Facebooking, students get to Skype with Danica, ask her questions and see firsthand the impacts of social media.
"I have learned that it can get you really far. I have learned with all the exposure, it really can increase someone's rating," said Kutztown senior Rebecca Deitzler.
The Facebook page students created got two million views Monday night.
"It has been amazing. I feel so supported," Danica said.
They hope all their effort helps Danica get to the end of the competition.
"I love 'The Wonder Years,' so this is such a great opportunity to kind of connect with Danica and sort of root her on for 'Dancing with the Stars,'" said Kutztown junior Jade Neff.
