Officials issue warning about use of illegal fireworks
Police across Berks County will be on alert as Independence Day fireworks celebrations get underway.
Authorities said they will be cracking down on residents using fireworks illegally.
In Reading, police officers have been given handouts with a breakdown illustrating what fireworks are only allowed to be used with a permit.
"For you to be able to handle them, you need to have the necessary licenses. So, if you don't have those licenses, stay away from them," said Francis Acosta, Reading City Council president.
In 1998, six homes in the 100 block of Rose Street went up in flames due to careless use of illegal fireworks, fire officials said.
"When you play with fireworks, you're basically putting at risk probably your neighbors, your kids, your family, because they are a fire hazard," Acosta said.
In Reading, authorities said violators could face a $1,000 fine and possible jail time. They also said illegal fireworks will be confiscated and destroyed by the bomb squad.
