SPRING TWP., Pa. -

A man has been arrested for allegedly firing several shots into an apartment in Berks County.

"He was running around shooting at the door and at the window," said neighbor Bintou Diallo. "I thought it was like fireworks. It was like 'bop bop.'"

Police responded at 2:46 p.m. Tuesday to the 2800 block of Wilson School Court in the Berkshire Hills area of Spring Township for the report of shots fired.

The first officers on the scene said they arrived to find Stephen M. Paul of 2900-A Wilson School Lane with a handgun inside a Jeep Wrangler.

Paul was taken into custody without incident, while crime scene tape separated broken glass and bullet holes from crowds of kids heading home from school in the afternoon.

"I have kids," said Rob Pugh, "so it really doesn't make me happy."

Police said they found several rounds had been fired at the front door area of an apartment. No one was inside at the time, police said.

"I pay a pretty good amount of money to live here," Pugh said, "and this is the kind of stuff that happens."

"When you live in this kind of area, you're expecting to be safer," said Diallo.

Paul was charged with discharge of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.

Investigators said they are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
