Plans for a major packaging distribution hub in Northampton County are raising some concerns.
FedEx is in the preliminary stages of developing the hub on property currently owned by the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority in Allen Township.
Some residents are worried about a park right near the proposed building property.
"I am worried about what is going to happen behind where we play every day," said Michole Pignato, Allen Township resident.
Some residents of Allen Township believe it will bring more than just jobs to their community.
"The traffic. They say 1,800 tractor trailers a day, operating around the clock seven days a week. The thing will be lit up like a Christmas tree all day and night," said John Mattaboni, Allen Township resident.
Noise pollution is a concern for some.
"Noise pollution, pollution from the trucks with all of the vehicles in an out of that facility," said Steve Pignato, Allen Township resident.
"For me, it is safety and noise," said Michole Pignato.
FedEx released the following statement:
"FedEx Ground is in preliminary talks with Allen Township and Northampton County for the potential building of a major package distribution hub on property now owned by the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.
A project of this size and scope requires careful planning and close coordination with township, county and state officials. Traffic and sound studies are a standard part of the planning process. In all of our facilities all over the country, our goal is to operate at or below the sound levels specified by local ordinances and to be a good corporate neighbor. As a matter of policy, we cannot provide any further information while a proposal is under consideration."
The Allen Township Planning Commission is currently discussing the proposal.
