A shocking find at Allentown's Allen High School.
Police say a 16-year-old student is facing charges after they say he took a loaded gun into the school.
Some students we spoke with say the school went on lock down just before 3:00 Tuesday afternoon.
They say they didn't know someone had a gun on school grounds.
With every school worker on edge since the Sandy Hook shooting, an alert worker at William Allen High School noticed something wrong.
“School district personnel observed via a security camera a student walking back into the building," said Allentown Police Chief Roger MacLean.
Workers went to find the 16-year-old male student and then made a shocking discovery.
“Upon finding him, they found that he had a weapon on him, at which time they immediately called the school resource officer which is an Allentown Police Cfficer,” added MacLean.
Police say it was a loaded handgun.
Officers took the teen to police headquarters, booked him, and now the student is facing three charges.
“Minor not to posses a firearm, firearm not to be carried without a license and also possession of a weapon on school grounds. One is a felony and two misdemeanor charges,” said MacLean.
Police say they are glad that no one was hurt.
For now it looks like this incident is not connected to any other crime.
“At this point we see it as a random incident that we are taking care of," said MacLean. "Obviously it's always a concern when there are weapons in the hands of especially a 16-year-old. We have no information that this is part of a larger type of an event or conspiracy type of thing.”
The Allentown School District has confirmed to us that the student has been suspended and may be expelled.
Police tell us it was the student's first day of classes at Allen.
