WASHINGTON -

Allentown now has money to fight obesity in its children.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors awarded money to six winners of the 2012 Childhood Obesity Prevention Awards during the winter meeting in Washington, D.C. Wednesday.

The awards went to cities with outstanding programs that encourage healthy weight through balanced diet choices and regular physical activity.

An independent panel evaluated the cities' programs based on innovativeness, creativity, replicability and potential impact.

Allentown took first place in the medium city category and will receive $120,000 for Mayor Ed Pawlowski's program, "Fruits and Veggies on the Move."

This is a variation on the ice cream truck theme. A branded truck, loaded with fruits and vegetables, will travel to playgrounds and recreation sites throughout the city and offer free fruits and veggies to kids.

Other cities to receive funds to fight obesity were Louisville, Ky., Houston, Texas, Las Cruces, N.M., Lima, Ohio and Patterson, La.
