Bethlehem mayor looks to 2012

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

For the Lehigh Valley's Christmas city it may look like Bethlehem opened all its gifts last year.

The opening of ArtsQuest, the SteelStacks and many restaurants could lead some to believe it will be a quiet 2012.

Mayor John Callahan says not so fast.

Callahan was tight lipped on some projects coming up because he tells us the deals are not complete.

He says you can bet on the ArtsQuest SteelStacks campus growing a little more.

Bethlehem mayor John Callahan hopes to see even more development on the south side of Bethlehem in 2012 when he looks out his window.

"Liberty property and trust has broke ground a couple months ago on a 1.2 million square foot, logistics center in the old Bethlehem steel site, in LVIP 7, that's projecting somewhere between four hundred and five hundred jobs.", said Callahan

There is no tenant for the building that will have a projected cost of 20 million dollars.

Callahan says that's not the only new construction people will see.

"There's some ideas and some projects in the works right now.", added Callahan, "Nothing I can announce just yet publicly. I'm confident that 2012 will see real significant progress on sort of the western end of the steel stacks campus."

In February, the Shoppes at the Sands Casino will grow from nine stores to twenty-two.

Then in May, Callahan feels more tax dollars will be pumped into the city when the Sands Casino Events Center opens up.

On the north side, the mayor says he plans to revisit the redevelopment of the Martin Tower site.

A project that was voted down when the Bethlehem school board wouldn't agree to tax incremental financing

"There was a new election and elections have consequences.", said Callahan, "It looks on the surface, with the new board members that have come on board they've got at the very least an open mind towards hearing about the TIF."

As for festivals, Callahan is hoping the weather will be better for Musikfest.

He says it will still be split between the north side and south side because from what he can tell merchants on both sides benefited from the change.
