DA: Deadly shooting in 2011 was an accident; no charges

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

The shooting death of a young man in 2011 has been determined to be an accident, authorities announced Friday.

Cody Scheetz was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen inside a relative's home on Americus Drive in Salisbury Twp., Lehigh Co., on March 31, 2011, officials said.

Sheetz, 20, of South Whitehall Twp., was rushed to a hospital, but he died a short time later.

During their investigation, police seized evidence, including two guns, from the home and sent it to a state police laboratory for DNA analysis, ballistics testing and gunshot residue analysis, said District Attorney Jim Martin.

"The results of DNA testing were recently obtained, and it appears that the young man was putting a .38-caliber revolver, which was owned by his grandfather, into his waistband when it  discharged," Martin said. "The case is closed, and no charges will be filed."

Grim last month ruled the manner of Sheetz's death accidental.
