DA: Former teacher had sex with students
Prosecutors on Tuesday announced the arrest of a woman who they said had sex with high school boys while she was a teacher.
Rachel Farrell, who teaches under her maiden name, Rachel Werner, was charged with corruption of minors and related offenses.
Farrell, 25, of Easton, admitted to having sex with two 17-year-old boys on numerous occasions in August and October 2010 while she was an 11th grade teacher at Bangor Area High School in Northampton County, said District Attorney John Morganelli.
"The expectation level of all of us is when our kids go to high school they're not going to be enticed or encouraged to engage in sex with someone who's in a position of authority," said Morganelli, who noted that up to four boys could be involved. "My understanding there were many sexual relationships that occurred."
According to court records, one of the students, identified only as "GR," said Farrell was his 11th grade reading teacher. The student told police that chats on Facebook and text messages over the phone evolved into a sexual relationship.
Often, according to the records, the sex occurred in each other's car at various locations, including the parking lot of a Walmart on Route 248 and inside a motel in Monroe County.
The Bangor Area School District said that as soon as officials learned of the allegations against Farrell they went straight to the district attorney's office.
"As a result of that, the teacher is no longer an employee of the Bangor Area School District," said Superintendent Patricia Mulroy.
Farrell, who resigned from her teaching position in December, surrendered to authorities Tuesday morning, Morganelli said.
Farrell was freed from jail on $5,000 bail. Attempts by 69 News to contact her went unanswered at her home in Easton.
