Dispatcher, EMS share story of to baby delivery on highway
Wednesday was a memorable day for some workers with Bethlehem Township EMS and Northampton County 911. Jason Bate, an EMT, and Terry Golden, Jr., a paramedic, responded to a mother in labor on the side of a highway.
It happened Wednesday morning on Route 33 southbound in Lower Nazareth Township in Northampton County. The minivan was pulled over near the on ramp from Route 248. The emergency workers said the parents were on their way to the hospital but the baby couldn't wait.
"Mom and dad did all the work," said Bate. By the time Bate and Golden arrived, they said they helped the mother with the final stages of delivery and made sure the mother was comfortable and the baby was healthy.
"I don't have any children but it was just amazing to see how mom and baby, the bond they had was amazing and just how in love with her little girl she was," said Bate.
Golden, on the other hand, has six children. "I think that kind of helped, too. I was able to kind of know what the mother would want as far as comfort goes," he said.
The 911 dispatcher who took the call from the father said the father was calm and told the dispatcher this was the couple's third baby. The dispatcher said, "He was very easy to get information from, verified everything that we needed to and was doing really well for a father about to have a little one."
"We were able to hear the baby's first cry and know that everything was okay," she added.
Considering the delivery happened on the side of a highway, the emergency responders said the situation went smoothly.
"For a lot of reasons it could have been pretty dangerous," said Golden. "They were pretty close to an on ramp so that poses a problem. The speed limit there is pretty high."
In a profession that sees a lot of bad situations, the EMS partners agreed this call was special.
"I've never experienced anything like this. It was an experience I'll never forget," said Bate.
Golden said,"Found out today that no matter whose baby it is, it's a very happy experience."
Mom and baby were taken to the hospital where they are said to be doing well.
